Essential Safety Tips for Heavy Machinery Operations

Heavy machinery makes tough jobs possible, but it demands respect. Most incidents can be prevented with good habits and a clear safety culture. Use these essentials on every job.

1. Use Only Trained, Qualified Operators

Operators should be trained and authorized for the specific machine they run. Never let an untrained person “just move it.”

2. Inspect Before Every Shift

Do a walk-around check:

  • Tires or tracks
  • Hydraulic hoses and leaks
  • Fluid levels
  • Lights, horn and backup alarm
  • Brakes and steering
  • Guards and safety devices

Report any defect immediately and don’t operate faulty equipment.

3. Know Your Site

Identify overhead power lines, underground utilities, soft ground, slopes and trenches before work begins. Set up clear exclusion zones around working machines.

4. Keep Communication Clear

Use radios or agreed hand signals, and make sure the operator and ground crew understand them. Operators must never move if they lose sight of a spotter.

5. Wear the Right PPE

Hard hat, hi-vis clothing, safety boots, gloves and eye and hearing protection should be standard for everyone on site.

6. Respect Load Limits

Never exceed the rated capacity of a crane, forklift or loader. Keep loads low and stable when traveling, and secure everything properly.

7. Mount, Dismount and Park Safely

Use three points of contact when climbing on and off. When parking, lower attachments, engage the brake, switch off the engine and remove the key.

8. Manage Fatigue and Distractions

Tired or distracted operators make mistakes. Plan breaks and keep phones out of the cab.
